Lancaster ISD Board of Trustees Commemorate Honor with Alumni Scholarship

April 3, 2018
Lancaster, TX/Lancaster ISD – To commemorate the Lancaster ISD Board of Trustees’ selection as the 2016 Texas Association of School Administrators /Texas Association of School Boards Outstanding Board of the year, the Lancaster ISD Board of Trustees have established the Lancaster ISD Honor Board Scholarship fund for Lancaster High School Alumni currently enrolled in college.
“The Honor Board Scholarship is like a note from home and a pat on the back to let our students know how proud we are of their hard work,” Lancaster ISD Board President, Ellen Clark said. “We want our graduates to know how important it is for all of our students to complete their college years and financial support encourages them and lets them know they are important to us.”
To qualify for the scholarship, applicants are required to be a second year college student and, Lancaster High School graduate with a 3.0 or above cumulative grade point average. The applicants are also required to submit a brief statement, which includes their current career aspirations, community activities, financial need and two letters of recommendation from a professor or administrator from their college or university.
Lancaster ISD College and Career Readiness Director Creslond Fannin managed the application process for the Honor Board Scholarship and believes the Board of Trustees is being intentional in creating opportunities for students to be successful after graduating high school.
“We have an amazing school board that believes in creating opportunities for our students,” she said. “This type of direct support for our alumni will only motivate them to continue to push through to achieve their academic goals.”
The Board of Trustees announced the names of six Lancaster High School alumni who will be the Honor Board scholarship recipients at a school board meeting.
Lancaster High School 2014 graduate, Fre’Drika Aubrey, who is currently a senior at Texas Southern University, was surprised and thankful to be among those included as a scholarship recipient.
“From the bottom of my heart, I definitely just want to say thank you to the Lancaster Board of Trustees for this opportunity,” she said. “This scholarship is more than just money. It’s literally helping me start my career and reach my goals of becoming an English teacher.”
Ricky Dillard, a junior at Texas A&M University and 2015 Lancaster High School graduate, shared the same sentiment.
“I am grateful to receive this scholarship. It’s going to definitely do great things for me as I further my education,” he said. “You all are sticking to the plan and giving students more than a diploma and that means a lot to me as a graduate of LHS.”
Just as the Trustees have shown their support to Lancaster High School alumni, they also plan to provide financial relief to some current students this year.
The Board was awarded the 2017 Council of Urban Boards of Education award and received $2,500 to be used to help the school boards advance their goals. These funds are currently being considered to help defray the cost of college entrance exams and fees.
